Band Students and Parents,
On behalf of Mr. Meyer, Mr. Nix and myself, we welcome you to the 2020-2021 Maine South High School Band! Whether you are a brand new member or a returning student, we are so grateful that you have chosen to play a part in our historic band program. Next year will be the 57th version of the Maine South High School Band and we are excited to see and hear what is next for the group. Given our current world circumstances, we also know that next year will look very different compared to the first 56 years of Maine South Band. Before the ink has even dried on the grades from this year, we are already working hard to plan innovative and creative ways to implement a meaningful instrumental music education regardless of our settings for next year. As our superintendent's message yesterday stated, we will need to be flexible as we traverse the different phases as mandated by the governing bodies.
Band Calendar for Next Year
We wanted to share with you the complete calendar for the year so that at the moment when it is approved and safe to reconvene, we can hit the ground running. Plus, we wanted the new families to see what a "regular" year of band looks like. Obviously everything has a giant asterisk next to it for the time being. Without going too far down the "What if?" rabbit hole, know that we will do our very best to ensure that the students are having the best experience possible and receiving the best education that we can provide.
For now, please use the calendar to save the dates!

Things that WILL NOT be cancelled
When every event and activity is being cancelled around us, it is important to know that the community that we have established within the band can not be removed. The bonds and memories that we make together will not be taken away. Instead, we will continue to make new and powerful connections through music! Our student leadership team has already met to brainstorm ideas on how to welcome our new members aboard and unite as sections and as a band. Please know that staff and students will do everything we can to provide an inclusive environment and as Mr. Bachmann always says, "Everybody in band counts!" Additionally, our endeavor to grow as individual musicians cannot be cancelled. We will continue to strive for those goals.
What To Do This Summer
Keep going! Don't stop the momentum that we maintained during this spring season of E-Learning. We know Mr. Bachmann and Mrs. Hutter have also been working hard to make sure you are prepared for an amazing high school band experience. Continue to make them proud! Go practice!
Students should practice their marching band music that can be viewed in the folder below. The files are coded by which band you will be in (freshmen woodwinds and brass are all in Concert Band so use the files marked "CB"). Percussionist, view the document "drumline audition packet 20-21" in the folder for music and instructions.

Private lessons are always the best way to improve on your instrument. All of our private lessons teachers have continued to teach virtually and we have been hearing that things are still going very well. Unlike middle school where students received small group instrument specific lessons, we only ever meet as large ensembles during class time. To get the individual instruction and attention that each student needs and deserves, we highly recommend private lessons. 70% of the band this year studied privately with a professional on their instrument. If you've never taken private lessons before or have taken a break for a while, this summer might be a great time to start the new routine.
Please reach out directly to the lesson teachers to make arrangements. Their contact information can be found on the Private Lesson Teachers tab of the Band Website
Band Email List
We will use this email list to communicate important information and updates throughout the summer and the school year. Please reply to this email if you would prefer to add a different email to this list or remove a current address. We will reach out a few times over the summer and then about once a week or bi-weekly during the school year.
Thank you for supporting your student musician.
